Curve Dental
How to read this. This is Rivas Will's read on publicly observable signals — founder tenure, PE fund vintage, hiring patterns, acquisition posture. It is analysis, not insider information. If you are the founder and we have it wrong, write to Sam — the correction ships in the next update.
Cloud-native dental practice management software, headquartered in Provo, Utah. Founded in 2004 by Matt Dorey. Serves 80,000+ dental professionals across the United States and Canada. Additional offices in Atlanta, Calgary, and Aberdeen, Scotland.
Product
Curve sells an all-in-one cloud-based platform covering scheduling, charting, imaging, billing, insurance claims, patient communication, and reporting. The product was cloud-native from launch — not a legacy system migrated to a browser. That distinction matters: it means no local server, no IT maintenance, and remote access by default. In a market still dominated by server-installed incumbents (Henry Schein's Dentrix, Patterson's Eaglesoft), Curve's cloud-first architecture is a structural advantage for DSOs and multi-location groups.
Financial trajectory
Revenue reached $22.4M in 2024, up from $13.2M in 2023 and $8M in 2021, per Latka. That is roughly 70% year-over-year growth from 2023 to 2024 — strong for a 20-year-old company. If a meaningful share of that revenue is recurring (it almost certainly is, given the SaaS model), the ARR sits comfortably in the $20M-$25M band. Employee count is approximately 184 per Latka, consistent with Crunchbase's 101-250 range and Glassdoor's 51-200 bracket.
Funding
One venture round led by Battery Ventures. No disclosed amount. No subsequent rounds visible on Crunchbase. David Cormack invested alongside Battery and is a Battery LP. The single-round structure and 20-year operating history suggest the company ran on revenue for most of its life — this is closer to a bootstrapped profile than a venture-backed one.
Leadership — the Brightree pattern
This is the most important section of the brief.
David Cormack, Chairman and CEO, is a serial healthcare-SaaS founder. He founded Brightree in 2005, a business management and clinical software company for post-acute healthcare. He served as Brightree's President and CEO, then sold the company to ResMed for $800 million in 2016. After the exit, he invested in Curve Dental alongside Battery Ventures and became Chairman and CEO.
Cormack did not come alone. The Curve Dental leadership team is stacked with Brightree alumni:
- Jana Macon, President — former Vice President at Brightree
- Gary Long, Chief Revenue Officer — former Brightree executive
- Suzanne Henderson, Chief Technology Officer — former CTO of Brightree
- Glen McDonnell, General Counsel — former legal leader at Brightree (and at Carestream Dental, a direct Curve competitor)
That is five of eleven named leaders with Brightree on their resume. This is a team that has executed an $800M vertical-SaaS exit together and reassembled at a smaller company in the same sector. The pattern is unmistakable.
Scott Poitevent, CFO, does not come from Brightree but from Parthenon-EY (strategy consulting with a healthcare focus) and two prior SaaS CFO roles. His background includes "rapid company growth and M&A." You bring in a CFO with M&A credentials when you are preparing for a transaction.
Founder Matt Dorey is no longer in the CEO seat. His exact current role is unclear from public sources, but the transition to Cormack as operating CEO is confirmed across Glassdoor, Datanyze, and Equilar.
Chelsea Stoner, General Partner at Battery Ventures, has held a board seat at Curve Dental since the 2018 Battery investment (VentureCapitalJournal, 2018 — "Chelsea Stoner, who is joining the new board along with Battery"). Battery's own team page lists Curve Dental alongside ContinuumCloud, Maxio, Ontra, Redox and TrueContext as her current active board positions, and explicitly tags her investment focus as "Vertical SaaS, healthcare IT" with Brightree among her previous investments. Stoner sits on Battery's Executive Committee. The board-level signal here is structural: the Battery GP holding the Curve seat is the firm's senior vertical-SaaS / healthcare-IT specialist, with a fully-realised Brightree exit on her record and an 8-year-and-counting tenure on the Curve board. The Brightree-team-reassembly thesis has six confirmed nodes, not five — four operating leaders (Macon, Long, Henderson, McDonnell) plus Cormack as CEO plus Stoner as Battery's lead board director, all of whom overlapped at Brightree before its $800M sale to ResMed.
Exit signal analysis
| Signal | Detail | Strength | |---|---|---| | Founder tenure | Dorey founded in 2004 (22 years). No longer CEO. | High | | Operator-CEO with exit track record | Cormack sold Brightree for $800M | High | | Brightree alumni team reassembled | 5 of 11 leaders are Brightree veterans + Stoner board seat | High | | Battery's lead is Brightree's lead | Chelsea Stoner (Battery GP, Exec Committee, vertical-SaaS / healthcare-IT specialist) holds the Curve board seat; Brightree was a prior Battery position she carried | High | | CFO with M&A background | Poitevent from Parthenon-EY, prior M&A experience | High | | Battery Ventures investor | 2018 vintage growth-equity round; 8-year hold; will need a liquidity event | Moderate | | No corp dev hire detected | No public posting for VP Corporate Development (re-verified 2026-04-29) | Neutral | | No acquisition rumor | No press or filings mentioning a sale process | Neutral |
I think Curve Dental is being built toward a sale. The leadership composition is the clearest signal: you do not reassemble an $800M exit team at a $22M-revenue dental software company unless you intend to run the same playbook. The absence of rumors and corp-dev hires suggests the process has not started yet — they are likely building to a higher revenue base before engaging buyers. At 70% growth, another 12-18 months could put them in the $35M-$40M ARR range, which would command a materially higher multiple.
2026 TRAVERSE refresh (April)
Re-verified the signals five days after the initial discover. Three things to note.
Cormack title confirmed unchanged. Curve Dental's own leadership page, fetched 2026-04-17, still lists Dave Cormack as "Chairman and Chief Executive Officer." Wikipedia now abbreviates this to "Chairman of Curve Dental Software," but the company page is the primary source — Cormack remains operating CEO. No succession event has been announced. Cormack did take on an unrelated non-executive role in January 2026 (chair of the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association board, LEEA press release) alongside his existing Aberdeen FC chairmanship — board-level community roles, not an operating step-back.
Signal 3 (hiring) remains negative. Curve Dental's live Rippling ATS, fetched 2026-04-17, posts Build & Release Engineer (Scotland), Build & Release Specialist (Canada), Product Designer (via Built In), and sales roles. No "VP Corporate Development," no "Head of M&A," no "Head of Strategy." If a corp-dev hire is coming, it is not in market yet.
Signal 4 (founder posture) remains negative. Matt Dorey's public-posture footprint in 2026 is thin. Crunchbase's person record still labels him "Founder & CEO" — this is the same staleness pattern as Actionstep's Ted Jordan (three-plus years out of date per the 2026-04-16 LESSONS.md entry); the company's own leadership page is the authority, and Dorey is not on it. He is listed as a Board Member at Unreasonable, which is a pre-existing role. No "next chapter" language, no founder interview for 2026.
Product cadence has accelerated. Curve's press feed through Q1 2026 is dense with product launches: the Curve FLO AI press release, the Ask CurveAI demo at Chicago Midwinter Meeting (February 2026), Curve Pay launch, the Pearl AI integration partnership, Mango Voice AI integration, Dental Intelligence online-scheduling integration, and external recognition as a cloud-native leader in the 2026 Dental Technology Landscape report. Six launch-grade announcements in one quarter is unusually dense. I read this as consistent with "stack the product-roadmap optics before you engage" — not proof of an active process, but a pattern founders run when they expect to be in a data room inside 12 months. It could equally be genuine product acceleration; the thesis does not require exit intent to explain it.
Competitive pressure. Planet DDS (Level Equity-backed) is the clear cloud-segment leader with 14,500 practices and 175,000 users, supporting more 100+ location DSOs than any other cloud-based dental PMS provider (Planet DDS newsroom, 2026). The cloud-native gap is closing fast; Henry Schein's Dentrix Ascend and Patterson's cloud efforts continue. Curve's 70% revenue growth in 2024 is the right trajectory, but the window where "cloud-native dental PMS, $22M revenue, Brightree exit team in place" commands a scarcity premium is not indefinite.
Net read. Exit-signal strength held at 4/5. The thesis is the same as the discover read — leadership team assembled for an exit, CFO with M&A background, absent corp-dev hire — just re-verified against live sources five days on. The active wait is for (a) a VP Corporate Development posting or (b) Dorey's first public "next chapter" language or (c) a competitor transaction that re-prices the cloud-native dental PMS comp set.
2026-04-29 cycle-back TRAVERSE
Twelve days on from the 2026-04-17 re-verification. Three things to note.
Brightree-pattern depth corrected. The earlier brief read the Brightree-alumni signal at five nodes (the four named operators plus Cormack as CEO). The cycle-back surfaced Chelsea Stoner's Curve board seat — primary-sourced via Battery Ventures' own team page ("She serves on the boards of ContinuumCloud, Curve Dental, Maxio, Ontra, Redox and TrueContext"). Stoner is a Battery General Partner on the firm's Executive Committee, focused on vertical SaaS and healthcare IT, and Brightree is named as one of her previous investments. She joined the Curve board at the 2018 Battery investment per VentureCapitalJournal, 2018. That makes the team-reassembly signal six nodes, not five: four operating leaders (Macon, Long, Henderson, McDonnell) + Cormack as CEO + Stoner as Battery's lead board director. The Battery-Ventures-investor row in the signals table was generic; the more precise signal is the Battery partner holding the Curve seat is the same partner whose realised Brightree exit anchors her track record. That is a different and stronger statement than "Battery as a class will need an exit." The 2018 vintage now makes the hold eight years long — squarely inside the typical Battery growth-equity exit window.
Signal 3 (hiring) re-verified negative. Curve Dental's Rippling ATS, refetched 2026-04-29, posts three roles: Site Reliability Engineer (Scotland), Site Reliability Engineer (Calgary), and a Sales Development Representative (Alpharetta). Different mix from 2026-04-17 (Build & Release Engineer + Product Designer + sales) — the rotation is normal — but no Corporate Development, M&A, Strategy, Chief of Staff, or Investor Relations role has appeared. Twelve days of dated null on Signal 3 since the prior re-verification, ~25 days of dated null since the 2026-04-12 discover. The dated-null streak is now itself the data — at a 22-year-old, $22M-revenue, growth-equity-backed company assembling a Brightree-pattern team, the absence of a corp-dev role four-to-five months into 2026 is a constraint on how soon a sell-side process could plausibly start.
Signal 4 (founder posture) re-verified negative. Curve Dental's own leadership page, refetched 2026-04-29, lists Cormack as Chairman and CEO and does not list Matt Dorey anywhere. Crunchbase still labels Dorey "Founder" but no longer attaches "& CEO" — the staleness pattern is correcting toward the primary-source position. No 2026 "next chapter" or "exploring opportunities" public language from Dorey has surfaced. Cormack's January 2026 LEEA chair role remains the most recent material public-posture move and it remains a community board addition, not a Curve operating step-back.
Q2 2026 product-launch cadence has paused. The dense Q1 2026 cadence (six launch-grade announcements: Curve FLO AI, Ask CurveAI, Curve Pay, Pearl AI integration, Mango Voice AI integration, Dental Intelligence integration) has not extended into Q2. Curve's Events & News page, refetched 2026-04-29, shows nothing newer than 18–19 February 2026 webinars. The PRNewswire fingerprint is also quiet — the most recent headline is the 2026 USA TODAY Top Workplaces award (citation in SERP). Two readings, neither requiring exit intent: (a) launches were timed to Chicago Midwinter (February 2026) and the 2026 HealthStream Ventures report cycle (March 2026), so Q2 is naturally quieter; (b) optics were stacked in Q1 ahead of a process kick-off and Q2 is the data-room build. Hold both readings, do not commit. The thesis does not turn on this datapoint either way.
Net read. Exit-signal strength held at 4/5. The Stoner correction sharpens the signal stack but does not introduce a discrete event. The brief remains publishable: true; this update is a refinement, not a state change. The next discrete event that would push to 5/5 is unchanged: (a) a VP Corporate Development or Head of M&A posting on Curve's ATS, (b) a Dorey "next chapter" public post, or (c) a Planet DDS / Dentrix Ascend / cloud-segment competitor transaction.
Likely buyer profiles
- Henry Schein — owns Dentrix (server-based market leader). Acquiring Curve would give Henry Schein a cloud-native platform without the multi-year rebuild. Henry Schein already built Dentrix Ascend (cloud), but Curve has stronger market traction in the pure-cloud segment.
- Patterson Companies — owns Eaglesoft. Same strategic logic as Henry Schein.
- Constellation Software / Volaris — serial acquirer of vertical SaaS in this exact size band. Dental software fits the Constellation profile perfectly.
- PE roll-up — dental software is ripe for consolidation. A PE firm could buy Curve and bolt on smaller dental SaaS players (DentiMax, ACE Dental, tab32).
- ResMed — already owns Brightree. Cormack has the relationship. A dental-adjacent expansion would extend ResMed's connected-care platform into a new vertical.
Open questions for future updates
- What is Matt Dorey's current title and day-to-day involvement?
- Has Battery Ventures exited any of the position, or do they hold the full stake?
- What is Curve's gross retention rate? The 70% revenue growth could mask churn if expansion revenue is driving it.
- Is Curve active in any international markets beyond Canada?
- When did Cormack officially take the CEO title? The timing matters for estimating the exit window.
